2009 PRESENTERS:
ANNE STANFIELD-HAGERT has a lifetime interest in popular music from 1880 - 1920. A musician and vocalist, she has presented educational talks on various aspects of popular American culture as reflected in sheet music. The caricatured views and songs of migrants as newcomers allowed for lighthearted (and condescending) portrayals that reflected both racism and fear. For the newcomer to the U.S., songs fueled nostalgia for the home country or for a mother or sweetheart left behind. Anne recently did a presentation for the Association of Recorded Sound Collection annual conference at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. Currently in Philadelphia, she assists her husband Thornton Hagert on the management of the Vernacular Music Archive.
LEE SCHREINER of Rockford, Illinois has been collecting music of the war era since 1974. He has one of the largest collections of WWI music in the country. Lee's WWI collection is one of two used for the two volume reference World War I Songs by Bernard Parker. His presentation will be covering the period from the end of World War I to the conclusion of World War II. Lee addresses the changing attitude of the nation toward war and how this is reflected in the music of the time. Music played a distinctly different role in the Second World War as compared to the First World War. Lee will include many rare and colorful sheets along with many of the more familiar songs that were themes of the war years.
JOE CAVALIER, of Chicago, Illinois is a Professor Emeritus at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, former cornet player with the Red Rose Ragtime Band and other Chicago traditional jazz groups. He is a sculptor, occasional writer, and dealer of sheet music, antique photographs and books. Joe is a lifelong collector of sheet music, books, photos, postcards, and ephemera who claims that whatever he does not collect, his wife, Maureen Sherlock, does. His sheet music collection is large and eclectic. Its largest and most extensive holdings are ragtime, blues and jazz related categories. Another significant area of the collection focuses on the social, economic and political struggles for human rights including such topics as women's suffrage, race, gender, labor issues and the political left.
KEVIN LYNCH has been a music collector for over a dozen
years, specifically collecting 19th century popular American music. Kevin
collects British as well as American music from the period 1736 - 1920;
from the colored engravings of George Bickham Jr. in 18th century England
to the last of the warm and colorful Knapp feminine portrait lithographs
of 1919 and 1920. Kevin has a degree from the University of California in
theater. He has worked as a professional actor for many years performing
Shakespearean plays throughout the western states. Kevin does fundraising
and marketing work in the greater Seattle area for local non-profits and
theaters. He and his 14-year-old daughter live in Edmonds, WA. In addition
to images from Kevin's collection, his presentation will include the music
of Aaron Copland and his own narration.
