On February 27th Milwaukee's Irish folk band, Blarney, will be releasing its newest CD. Blarney will also be inviting past members of the band to play as it's the bands 35th anniversary. The concert will be a benefit for the Ward Irish Music Archives (WIMA) new exhibit "A Song For Ireland". The concert will take place at the Irish Fest Center at 1532 Wauwatosa Ave. at 7:30. Doors open at 6:30. Cost is $10 for general seating. All attendees will also receive a $5 coupon off the cost of Blarney's new CD!
Blarney began its journey 35 years ago when Ed Ward and Bernie McCartan started the band while attending Marquette University. Today the band consists of Chuck Ward, Kevin Stapleton and Dennis Murphy. Blarney has played at many festivals, pubs, clubs & events around the Milwaukee area and also throughout the United States and in Ireland.
Blarney has been dedicated to Irish Folk Music from its beginning. BLARNEY celebrates the "Music of Ireland " - songs that reflect the rich history and spirit of the Irish experience- songs of the sea, songs of love, songs of uprising and rebellion, and of course, the spirited pub tunes of revelry. Because of the bands rich tradition of song, Blarney is proud to support the Archives new exhibit on Irish song.
The Archives "A Song For Ireland" exhibit will explore the history of songs associated with Ireland and Irish America. Most of Irelands early songs evolved from the English ballad tradition. Later Thomas Moore penned many nationalistic songs using Irish Harp melodies. Because of Ireland's history a whole genre of Rebel songs developed and the Folk song tradition in Ireland was very strong during the 20th century, regaining commercial popularity during the folk revival in the 1950s-60s.
This exhibit will be taken to various festivals around the U.S. in the
summer of 2010.
