Victor Herbert's musical career was immense. He was known as a virtuoso cellist around the world. He was a founder of the New York String Quartet, and member of the New York Philharmonic for eleven consecutive years. He directed the 22nd Regiment Band of the New York National Guard (Patrick Gilmore's Band) and was conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for six years. He was one of the first musical artists to be recorded and was known as an accomplished composer and arranger. He was a founding member of ASCAP. He composed 43 operattas and numerous other compositions. He is remembered today as one who was willing to integrate classical and popular music. His Babes in Toyland is a perfect example of this. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Victor continued his relationship with the Irish through many Irish-American organizations. His grandfather was Samuel Lover, another great poet and composer in Ireland.
