Grace Kelly was from the noted Kelly family of Philadelphia whose roots were from County Mayo, Ireland. Before Grace became famous as an actress and celebrity, her family members were famous. Both her father and brother were Olympic gold medalists in sculling. Her Uncle Walter Kelly was a famous comic in Vaudeville known as The Virginia Judge. Another uncle, George Kelly, was a notable playwright. Grace left for New York in 1947 where her career began in modeling and acting on Broadway. With her great beauty, the film industry discovered her in 1951.Various roles led to the banner year of 1954 when she starred in two Alfred Hitchcock films, Dial M for Murder and Rear Window plus winning the Academy Award for best actress for The Country Girl. In 1956, with the release of the film High Society, she gave up her film career to become the wife of Prince Rainer of Monaco. She Became Princess Grace and devoted her life to her husband, three children and adopted country. Her storybook life ended prematurely in a car crash.
