Carroll O'Connor

Carroll was born in Manhattan and raised in a suburb of Queens, New York. After four years in the Merchant Marines during WWII Carroll went to college at the University of Montana where he developed an interest in theater. Later he moved to Ireland to continue his theatrical studies at the National University of Ireland. Acting in his first professional role at the Dublin Gate Theater he worked in Europe until returning to New York in 1954. He worked on Broadway and eventually landed many character roles on film and in television. In 1971 he starred as Archie Bunker in one of TVs most influential sitcoms, All in the Family. The show ran for eight seasons. The show broke ground for the way it discussed controversial subjects, mostly around Archie's bigoted conservative views of the world.
