Exhibits: Irish Themes in Sheet Music

Monte Carlo and Alma Sanders

Monte Carlo was born in Denmark in 1883 and came to America in 1904. He went through some medical schooling in Chicago where he met and married Alma Sanders. Sanders was born in Chicago in 1882 and educated at the Chicago Musical College. She sang with many groups but made her living as a songwriter. She wrote the musical score for the film Ireland Today.

During the 1920's they wrote songs for Broadway productions, and they had many Irish themed hits including "That Tumble Down Shack in Athlone," "Little Town in the Ould County Down," "The Hills of Connemara," "The Old Wooden Bridge in Athlone," "Cottage by the Shannon," and "In the County Mayo."
