Irish songwriter and novelist Samuel Lover was also known as an artist. His portraits of local aristocrats and other notables, such as the composer Paganini, were highly regarded. His gifts rendered him popular in society where he would sing his own songs. Lover wrote a number of Irish songs, including "The Angel's Whisper," "Molly Bawn," and "The Four-Leafed Shamrock." Songs such as "The Low-back'd Car" and "Rory O'More" are still sung today. His grandson, Victor Herbert, became one of America's greatest composers.
