2009 CULTURAL VILLAGE HIGHLIGHTS
The Cultural Village will provide guests with a wide array of exhibits in addition to the cultural offerings of the County Down Sampler.
- In addition to several returning artists, the Moore Street Market will feature a group of artisans from Tipperary Arts. Aran knitter Rosaleen Hegarty, and basket-weaver Vincent McCarron from the Aran Islands. Hand-painted apparel by Lorsha Design and art from sculptor, Alice McDaniels of the Regional College in Downpatrick, will be available for purchase in the Moore Street Market.
- The Hedge School enhances the education of Irish culture with lectures by academic speakers, including Dr. Sean Crosson of the National University of Ireland.
- The Ward Archives Gallery will present an exhibit titled, Come Back to Erin - Irish Travel Posters of the 20th Century, showcasing a selection of 20th century travel and tourism posters from across Ireland.
- The Cultural Exhibits Pavilion will feature a primary display on the 125th anniversary of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) including: information about Croke Park Stadium, the headquarters of the GAA; the Michael Cusak Centre in Carron, County Clare, which honors the founder of the GAA; and the 1947 Clare football (American soccer) final victory at the Polo Grounds - the only football finals ever played on U.S. soil.
- The Cultural Exhibits Pavilion will also present an exact replica of the Our Lady of Knock shrine.
- Dr Tim Campbell, director of the Saint Patrick Centre in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, will exhibit the Centre in the Cultural Pavilion, in addition to giving talks throughout the weekend on The History of County Down in the Hedge School. He will also lead a discussion with the Young Ambassadors from the Milwaukee Chapter of the Friends of Saint Patrick, on their recent County Down experiences.
- The Northern Ireland bureau will make its second appearance at the festival, featuring a photo exhibit of Northern Ireland in the Cultural Pavilion.
- The Bangor Drama Club will perform a play written especially for Irish Fest on the history of the region titled, County Down: 10,000 years in 30 Minutes...or so in the Theatre Tent daily.
Other featured areas of the Villalge to experience include: Genealogy Pavilion, Tug-of-War, Currach Races, Hurling, Harp Stage, Waltons Shop, Literary Corner, Theatre Tent, Gaeltacht, Dance Tent and Village Pub.
